Former umpire Chris Pieters passed away
EDEGEM (Belgium) - Former Dutch national and international baseball umpire Chris Pieters (pictured left) has passed away on Wednesday, September 27, at the age of only 54 years old at Edegem (Belgium), close to his home near Antwerp. Chris was ill for quite some time.
Chris Pieters, born in Rotterdam, made his Dutch Major League debut in 1969 and developed himself to become one of the best Dutch baseball umpires ever, retiring at the end of the 1990 campaign, ending a 22 year career in the Dutch big league, in which he became the first to officiate in 500 or more games and was named to the International List numerous times.
The international career of Chris Pieters started in 1973 during the European Championships in Haarlem, The Netherlands. Since that year, Pieters participated in seven European Championships (four at Haarlem, two in Italy and one in Spain). Besides that Pieters represented The Netherlands at the World Championships in 1978 (Italy), 1980 (Japan), 1982 (South Korea), 1984 (Cuba), 1986 (The Netherlands) and 1990 (Canada). He also umpired in the two Dutch international events: the Haarlem Baseball Week and World Port Tournament.
Other tournaments include the Intercontinental Cup (1983, Belgium), Golden Cup Tournament (1984, Curaçao) and the Amsterdam Baseball Series (1986). In 1988, Chris Pieters experienced a career highlight, when he was one of the umpires during the Olympic Games in Seoul (South Korea), when baseball was an exhibition sport and the Dutch national team participated. In 1990 Pieters was a member of the umpire crew during the first IBA World All Star Game played at Atlanta. Another highlight came in 1986 when Chris Pieters was named IBA Umpire of the Year.
The Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) honoured Pieters in 1991 for his impressive career. Until recently Chris was a member of the Jury of Appeal for the Dutch Association.
A memorial service for Chris Pieters took place on Saturday-morning, September 30, in Antwerp, Belgium.

Oud-scheidsrechter Chris Pieters overleden
EDEGEM (België) - Voormalig nationaal en internationaal honkbal-umpire Chris Pieters (op de foto rechts) is op woensdag 27 september overleden op slechts 54-jarige leeftijd in Edegem (België), in de buurt van Antwerpen. Chris was al geruime tijd ziek.
Chris Pieters, geboren in Rotterdam, debuteerde in 1969 in de Hoofdklasse en ontwikkelde zichzelf tot één van de beste honkbal-scheidsrechters ooit. Na de competitie 1990 stopte Pieters, waardoor er een einde kwam aan een loopbaan van 22 jaar in de hoogste Nederlandse afdeling, waarin hij de eerste scheidsrechter werd met 500 of meer wedstrijden op zijn naam en regelmatig werd benoemd tot de Internationale Lijst.
De internationale loopbaan van Pieters begon in 1973 tijdens het Europees Kampioenschap in Haarlem. Sinds dat jaar nam Pieters deel aan zeven Europese Kampioenschappen (viermaal in Haarlem, tweemaal in Italië en eenmaal in Spanje). Daarnaast vertegenwoordigde Pieters Nederland op het Wereldkampioenschap van 1978 (Italië), 1980 (Japan), 1982 (Zuid-Korea), 1984 (Cuba), 1986 (Nederland) en 1990 (Canada). Hij nam ook deel aan de twee internationale Nederlandse evenementen: de Haarlemse Honkbal Week en het World Port Tournament.
Overige toernooien waaraan Pieters deelnam zijn ondermeer het toernooi om de Intercontinental Cup (1983, België), het Golden Cup-toernooi (1984, Curaçao) en de Amsterdam Baseball Series (1986). In 1988 beleefde Pieters een hoogtepunt in zijn loopbaan toen hij één van de scheidsrechters was tijdens de Olympische Spelen in Seoel (Zuid-Korea), waar honkbal een demonstratiesport was en het Nederlands team deelnam. In 1990 maakte Pieters deel uit van de umpire crew tijdens de eerste IBA World All Star Game in Atlanta. Een ander hoogtepunt kwam in 1986 toen Chris Pieters werd uitgeroepen tot IBA Umpire of the Year.
De Koninklijke Nederlandse Baseball en Softball Bond (KNBSB) benoemde Pieters in 1991 tot Lid van Verdienste voor zijn imposante staat van dienst. Tot voor kort was Chris nog lid van de Commissie van Beroep van de KNBSB.
De afscheidsplechtigheid voor Chris Pieters vond zaterdagochtend 30 september plaats in Antwerpen, België.
