Dutch Olympic Roster announced; six professionals added
SANTPOORT (Neth.) - The coaching staff of the Dutch national team announced their 24-man roster for the Olympics. Six new players were added to the roster, all active professionals. Evert-Jan 't Hoen, who plays for the triple-A team of the Anaheim Angels, and Ralph Milliard, who is a member of the triple-A team of the San Diego Padres, re-join the team. Both infielders played for the Dutch team before and also participated in last years Intercontinental Cup-tournament in Sydney. Complete newcomers are outfielder Hensley Meulens, who played 182 games in the Major League, the majority with the New York Yankees, and this season played in Mexico, infielder Sharnol Adriana, who played triple-A in the Toronto Blue Jays-organization and this season also played in Mexico, catcher Chairon Isenia, who plays in the minors for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and pitcher Ramhades Dijkhoff, who plays triple-A for the New York Mets, but played in the Majors for the Baltimore Orioles. Cut from the roster were Giel ten Bosch, Raymond Hofer, Marcel Joost, René Rijst (all Kinheim), Maikel Benner (Sparta/Feyenoord and Jurjan Koenen (HCAW).

Italian Olympic Roster announced
ROME (Italy) - Italy announced its roster for the Olympics. The team will be the same which participated in the Haarlem Baseball Week recently. The team includes former professional players Marco Cerbone, Daniel Di Pace, Daniel Newman, who were born and raised in the USA, but have Italian passports. Cerbone and Di Pace this year made their debut in both the Italian competition as the national team. Newman already is longer active in the Italian league. Other American-born and raised players are Seth LaFera, Chris Madonna, Battista Perri, Jason Simontacchi and Davide Sheldon.

Japanese Olympic Roster announced
TOKYO (Japan) - The roster of the national team of Japan will include eight players of the professional Japanese Baseball League. One of the players is Norihiro Nakamura of the b>Kintetsu Buffaloes, who leads the Pacific League with 25 homeruns ans also has 73 RBI's. Another member is 19-year old pitching sensation Daisuke Matsuzake of the Seibu Lions. The Pacific League allowed its six teams to let one player participate. The owners of the six Central League-teams refused as they will be in the final phase of the regular season during the Olympics.

Korean Olympic Roster announced
SEOUL (South Korea) - South Korea sends a Dream Team to the Olympics, as all professional players will be available for the national team. The professional Korean Baseball Organisation announced it will shut down for three weeks (September 8-28) and re-schedule 54 games to compile an All Star Team with some of the leading players. Manager Ung-Yong Kim selected 23 professional players to his roster and only one amateur, pitcher Dae-Hyun Chong of Kyunghee University. Some Korean baseball stars will play in Sydney, including Seung-Yeop Lee, who last season broke the homerun-record. Lee hit 54, breaking the old record od 42. Also selected is Jae-Hong Park, who leads the Korean Baseball Organisation with 40 homeruns, pitcher Soo-Kyung Kim, who leads in victories and strikeouts and Ji-Man Song, the MVP of this years All Star Game.

JOHANNESBURG (South Africa) - The South African Baseball Union announced the names of the players on its Olympic roster. The South African team will be the most unknown to participate in the Olympics.

Australian Olympic Roster announced
SYDNEY (Australia) - Former Major League-catcher Dave Nilsson is one of 24 players selected to the roster for the Australian Olympic Team. Nilsson played for the Milwaukee Brewers in the States, but went on to play in Japan this to be eligible for the Olympics. There, he played for the Chunichi Dragons, but was send to its minor league-team and later in the season released.

USA Olympic Roster announced
LOS ANGELES (USA) - USA Baseball and Major League Baseball on August 23 announced its roster with 28 professional players who will be eligible to participate in this years Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. A member of the squad is catcher Pat Borders (pictured left), who played twelve seasons in the Major League and was the 1992 World Series MVP for the Toronto Blue Jays. Also, first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz played in the big leagues for the Minnesota Twins, while outfielder Shawn Gilbert has Major League experience with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Later, a 29th player was added and an injured player was replaced. On September 15, the roster will be cut to the definitive 24 players.

Cuban Olympic Roster announced
HAVANA (Cuba) - The Cuban Baseball Federation named 30 players to its Olympic Roster on August 23. The team includes star players as infielders Omar Linares, Orestes Kindelan, Antonio Pacheco, outfielder Luis Ulacia and pitcher Omar Ajete, who all participated in the 1992 and 1996 Olympics. Also named to the team was pitcher Yosvani Perez, who pitched a no-hitter for the Cuban team recently in the Haarlem Baseball Week in The Netherlands.
